well behaved women

sound designer • michelle guthrie presents • hayes theatre

"from the whispy tones of the hand shaker, through the woody notes of the guitar onto the sonant depth of the double bass, one knows immediately this is going to be an evening of musical excellence.  ...the orchestrations are gorgeous.  ...yovich’s hua li hopes for her daughter in danger without disapproval as the soft beater on the top hat rings with martial overtones. the fear in the left-hand keyboard repetitions as cathy overcomes instinct is mighty and powerful." 4 ½ grey cardigans ★★★★☆

"with blazey best as director, melanie liertz as designer, jasmine rikz as lighting designer, david grigg as sound designer and adrienne patterson as stage manager, the line-up both out the front and backstage is as good as it gets."

deborah jones - limelight magazine

"at a time when women's voices are still struggling to be heard, new york based australian composer and lyricist carmel dean's well-behaved women is a wonderful battle cry of ballads about famous females from history to inspire modern generations to continue to break down the barriers."

sound designer • ensemble theatre

"david grigg's sound design is kept to an unobtrusive undertone that subtly gives scenes ambience, from background music and chatter in cafes and bars to outdoor sounds."

jade kops - broadway world

"one of the things I loved about outdated is that it is not sugar-coated.  the asinine voiceover from the ‘you plus me’ dating app, with its tips on profiles and photographs, is horribly believable.  i also loved the joyous moments courtesy of a karaoke app, which gave full rein to gordon’s song and dance capabilities, as well as some of the slickest scene changes an audience could ever hope for.   sharply directed with never a dull moment, this play will resonate with anyone who has used internet or app dating, and should make anyone who hasn’t very grateful!."

"outdated is unwavering in its commitment to laughter and optimism."

deborah jones - limelight magazine

"the introduction of music, physical comedy and some hilarious choreography in a vertical bed was a much-needed tonic."

“…david grigg’s sound design is possibly one of the better ones heard on sydney stages of late with focus on ensuring rice’s detailed text is not missed whilst the chamber orchestra performing backstage are blended to give the impression of a fuller sound in order to match lloyd webber’s original large orchestra compositions.”

jade kops - broadway world

“sound design by david grigg allows the music to pierce you at your core but still hear every word on stage. It’s a roof-shaking, wall-quaking night at the theatre.”

"there was a time when the hayes theatre company productions over-amplified the sound for this tiny space. In more recent times this has been corrected and with this production is perfected. a new australian musical is to be celebrated and this most welcome production comes highly recommended."

"sound designer david grigg allows us to be immersed into the world of the shop and those in it with a complex and intricate design.

"...[steven kreamer]'s choice of instruments and keyboard stylings gives a period feel to the audio (designer: david grigg) which was extremely well mixed last night.  that reverb in ‘vanilla ice cream’ was perfection.  ...she loves me is a feast for the senses that is not to be missed

judith greenaway - sydney arts guide

the rich scores loses little in downsizing to a six-piece band, under musical director steven kreamer. In fact, even after streaming the recent lavish Broadway revival, there appears little missing from the hayes’ telling. ★★★★

jason whittaker - daily review

this production of she loves me has the high standard of quality care and presentation that the hayes theatre is becoming famous for.
